International AME Awards Announces 2013 Shortlist

New York, NY – February 13, 2013: The AME Awards® for The World's Best Advertising & Marketing Effectiveness™ has announced the Shortlist for the 2013 competition. The Grand Jury of interactive and multidisciplinary marketers, planners, and creatives selected the Shortlist from entries submitted from 27 countries worldwide.

Two categories newly launched in 2013, Social Benefit and Branded Entertainment, exhibited an uptick in entries achieving Shortlist status with brands including CNN International, Volkswagen, DuPont, Intel, Bench, and Cornetto. Trends dominating the Shortlist include a robust number of entries employing celebrity interaction, interactive consumer participation, contests, green-themed, and cause marketing. The case briefs also showed trends in advocacy-led strategy, brand reinvention, and public responsibility.

“The big theme this year seemed to be 'celebrity'—whether that meant employing actual celebrities in a campaign or creating a contest where the consumers or their ideas would be the star,” said Alisun Armstrong, Executive Director, AME Awards. “It's an interesting shift from the community-building focus that prevailed in last year's competition, and just goes to show how a single trend can be translated into effective campaigns for an incredibly diverse field of brands.”

Celebrity-focused campaigns propelled multiple entries to the medal round: DDB Chicago “GED Pep Talk Center” for the Ad Council featured celebrities ranging from Christopher Lloyd to Terry Crewes; Metro International’s “Global Guest Editors” included Lady Gaga, Karl Lagerfeld, and Sir Richard Branson; DDB Hong Kong’s “Chinese New Year Campaign: Sharing the Blessings with One and All” for McDonald’s featured comedic duo Soft Hard. Other shortlisted entries with famous faces: TBWA\Santiago Mangada Puno’s “Benchingko/Films” for Bench starring Piolo Pascual and Coco Martin; OMD USA’s “Intel IdeaJam” with Ashton Kutcher; and Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO’s “Going from Good to Great” with British comics Stephen Fry and Jimmy Carr.

Strategic interactive consumer participation initiatives achieved stellar results for the following Shortlisted entries: Grey Worldwide GmbH “Breathe Happy” for Febreze; Heimat Werbeagentur GmbH Germany “CNN Ecosphere”; DDB Canada/Vancouver “Canada. Keep Exploring” for the Canadian Tourism Commission; DDB “Bleachable Moments” for Clorox Liquid Bleach; OMD Hong Kong “Wyeth Learning Surprise Video Library”; Spectacolor “Dunk Tank”; and Spinn Action Marketing Sweden “Is it a Chocolatewaferchocolate or a Waferchocolatechocolate?” for Kexchoklad.

Contest marketing helped gain brand awareness and provided a fast track to the medalist round: Fred & Farid Paris “Kisser Casting” for Martini; DDB Canada/Vancouver “‘Pass the Present’ Facebook Promotion,” for Best Buy Canada; and Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO UK with both “Going from Good to Great” for Pepsico and “Escape the Map” for client Mercedes Benz.

Entries in the Social Benefit categories concentrated on brand initiatives that contributed to the greater good including Green-themed “The Donation Army” by Ogilvy Germany for OroVerde Rainforest Foundation; Heimat Werbeagentur GmbH’s “CNN Ecosphere”; and TBWA\Santiago Mangada Puno’s campaign “KNOxOUT Project: EDSA” for Boysen Knoxout.

Germany saw 32 entries with Shortlist status with campaigns based in social media: DDB Tribal Group GmbH “Don´t Make Up and Drive,” for client Volkswagen; Serviceplan Gruppe GmbH & Co. kg “Internité pour Chalampé. A French village wants to become German.” for client Kabel BW GmbH; and Heimat Berlin took fan rivalry to the next level with “Go All in for Your Team. Make Your Choice” for client Adidas.

The United States was recognized with 15 Shortlisted entries; the Philippines with 9; Hong Kong 7; England 5; Canada, and France each with 4; China and Sweden each with 2; and Denmark, Egypt, Japan, Malaysia, and UAE were each recognized with 1. Read More

• Prashant Sankhé, executive creative director, Percept Gulf, UAE

“I’m so pleased that Robert, Prashant, and Orkun have agreed to return to the AME Jury this year. Their insight into the industry in the Middle East/Africa region is invaluable as we continue to expand our footprint in that part of the world.” - Alisun Armstrong, executive director, AME Awards

Orkun Demerelli started his career as an art director in Ajans Ultra. He took leave from his professional life in 1996 to study communication design in London at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Camberwell College of Arts. Following his studies, Orkun returned to Turkey to continue his career in Ajans Ultra. In 2001, he joined Rafineri where he continues his career as a creative director.

Robert Mitchell worked freelance as a photographer in many parts of Europe before joining Saatchi & Saatchi as an art director. Further posts followed at international agencies before he returned to Saatchi in Germany as creative director in 1993. His creative work has won awards in Berlin, London, New York, and Cannes.

As executive creative director at Scholz & Friends Hamburg, Robert ran the BMW account internationally. In 1999, he joined FCB as part of the global Jeep team, and played a key role in running the worldwide Samsung business. He left FCB in 2006 as worldwide creative director to set up a new agency in Dubai as managing director. Today Zed Communications has expanded to five Gulf markets and continues to win business and creative awards.

“It's important to understand a market to judge the creativity and effectiveness of its marketing communications properly. However, digital media connects us globally and creating one international panel to select the best of the best is the right way to go.” –Robert Michell

Prahshant Sankhé graduated as a fine artist and started his career as an illustrator in Mumbai. Enthralled by the power of the idea that lay within the strokes and shades, he soon moved closer to advertising, and 19 years later, he serves as the executive creative director of Percept Gulf, Dubai.

Prashant's experience is wide and varied. From food and beauty brands to banking, automobile and tourism, his portfolio includes local and international clients such as Mazda (UAE and Oman), Nando's, Peugeot, Citizen, Carter's, Nissan, and Ikea (Kuwait). Prior to Percept, Prashant headed creative at M&C Saatchi, where he shaped the communication for Dubai Tourism, Dubai Duty Free, LG, Sony, Samsung, Canon, Chevrolet, and Siemens, etc.

Prashant had this to say about the value of the AME Award. “I would certainly say winning an AME would place the winner on the market scene as a successful professional in today’s communication industry.”

The AME Grand Jury is comprised of interactive and multidisciplinary marketers, media planners, strategy directors, social media experts, and creatives. Jury panels award Gold, Silver, and Bronze to the highest scoring entries in each category. All Gold winning work from all regions is judged by the international Grand Jury to determine a Platinum Award for each of the five regions (North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle East & Africa and Asia Pacific) and the International Grand AME Award. Additional 2013 Grand Jury members will be announced in the coming weeks.

This year, AME unveiled strategic updates designed to enhance the 2013 competition and expand AME’s global footprint. Updates include a streamlined entry process, sleek new website design, revised entry fee structure, and a roster of new competition categories that mirror trends in the constantly evolving advertising and marketing industry. New categories include: Sports Promotion, Branded Entertainment, Ebooks, Games, Pop-up-Stores, Tablets, Low-budget, Collateral and Print, and a new category group Social Benefit.

The AME Awards enhanced scoring process improves the accuracy of each judge’s score by evaluating entries with four specific criteria weighted by importance: Challenge/Strategy/Objectives - 20%; Creativity - 25%; Execution - 25%; and Results/Effectiveness - 30%. Entries are first scored in regional rounds by jurors with specific knowledge of that particular market to assess their cultural and economic relevance. The final rounds are seen by the full international jury.
